    Biography. Born and raised in Brewarrina, New South Wales, Mervyn Bishop was encouraged by his mother to take his first photograph. After witnessing the ‘magic’ of the developing process, he became passionate about photography.
      He became Australia's first Aboriginal press photographer and in 1971 won the News Photographer of the Year Award with his front-page photograph Life and Death.
    An award winning photo-journalist, Mervyn Bishop was the first Aboriginal photographer for the 'Sydney Morning Herald'. Bishop's extensive career began in and in his work was included in the exhibition "Half Light: Portraits From Black Australia" at the Art Gallery of NSW.
